What Wrestling Season Taught Me About Not Wasting Food

Wrestling season runs on a schedule most people don't see — practice most days, meets on weekends, and meals that have to fit around both. I didn't expect it to change how I think about food waste, but it did.

When you're eating on a tight schedule, you start paying attention to portions in a way you didn't before — not because of any restriction, but because wasted food on a wrestling schedule means wasted time, too. You learn to plan a plate you'll actually finish, pack food that travels well to a meet, and not over-order when the team eats together after a match.

That habit — plan for what you'll actually eat, not what looks good on the table — turned out to be the same principle behind almost everything Stem4Free does. A lot of food waste isn't dramatic overproduction; it's small, repeated overestimating, at home and at events, that adds up over a season.

I don't think you need to be an athlete on a tight schedule to take something from this. Next time you're portioning a plate — at a team dinner, a family meal, anywhere — it's worth asking: am I taking what I'll actually eat?
