Overview

Stem4Free is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization fostering the reduction of wasted consumable food on both a national and international scale, raising awareness about food wastage, and providing a platform for youth advocacy regarding sustainability. We promote sustainable consumption of food by partnering with restaurants, businesses, and organizations by serving as an intermediary to distribute leftover food that would have otherwise been thrown out or donations from these entities to local food banks and homeless shelters at the end of the day.

Since our founding in 2020, Stem4Free has rescued nearly a million servings of food across 43 locations in the U.S., India, and Hong Kong.

Worry-free partnerships

According to the Good Samaritan Food Donation Act, signed by President Bill Clinton on October 1, 1996, businesses do not need to worry about liability for the food that they donate. The law encourages anyone to donate food and grocery products to non-profit organizations and protects the donor from liability when they donate to a non-profit organization, from civil and criminal liability should the product donated in good faith later cause harm to the recipient. Additionally, as long as the donor has no knowledge that the food they donate will harm the people who they are donating to and they donate in goodwill, they or their legal counsel do not need to investigate liability laws in 50 states.

The Food Donation Act of 2017 clarifies and expands food donation under the Emerson Act. There has never been a lawsuit recorded related to food donation. Food donation is not illegal and, as you will see in the benefits section, is actually encouraged by the government. Food donation processes ensure that safe food handling and transportation meet established standards.

Partnership mission

Our business plan revolves around making the process of donating as easy as possible. We run on the basis of businesses, organizations, and restaurants’ willingness to donate food to us, rather than monetary donations. Stem4Free is currently being rebuilt from the ground up under new, sole leadership; our director personally coordinates pickups to make sure the process stays simple: reach out, and we’ll take it from there.
