Healthy Fats

Fats get a bad rep. They’ve been demonized, but certain fats are good for your heart, your cholesterol, and your overall health. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats in particular have many benefits. Here’s a list of a few of them to add to your diet.

You’ve definitely heard of this one before –– avocados. They’re the latest craze. They contain a monounsaturated fat called oleic acid, which is also in olive oil. Avocados are also high in potassium and fiber. Make some homemade guacamole, or put a few slices on your toast.

Another one is dark chocolate, with at least 70% cocoa! Dark chocolate is loaded with antioxidants, and tastes great too!

Moving onto nuts! Almonds, peanuts, cashews, and pistachios are my favorite. Nut butters are a good source of fat as well. They’re a convenient snack and said to be one of the more satiating foods you can eat.

Fatty fish like salmon and albacore tuna are high-quality proteins that contain heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Studies have linked them to reduced risks of all sorts of common diseases such as heart disease, depression, and dementia.

Since they’re high in calories, it’s a good idea to eat these foods in moderation. Don’t eliminate fats from your diet, since they’re essential for normal functioning. They allow your body to absorb necessary vitamins, give you energy, support cell growth, and protect your organs, just to name a few… so enjoy healthy fats as a part of your balanced diet!
