Healthier Substitutes: Sugar!

Refined sugar has consumed the food industry in the US. American breakfasts are known to be sweet and sugary, and more than 1 in 10 Americans have diabetes. Sugar has a correlation Whether you are adding white or refined sugar to your coffee, smoothies, oatmeal, or baked goods, there are healthier substitutions for nutrient-free refined sugar in your diet! 

Applesauce

In addition to being a great substitute for butter or eggs for baked goods, applesauce is a natural sweetener with fewer calories and more fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Unsweetened applesauce is the healthiest replacement!

Honey

The ancient Egyptians used honey for everything from embalming the dead into mummies to healing infection because of honey’s many benefits. Honey is actually sweeter than sugar, but it has fewer calories and is more nutrient-dense, rich in vitamins and minerals. It also has a long shelf-life and has anti-inflammatory effects on the body!

Bananas

Mashed bananas are also rich in nutrients with a naturally great flavor. They can replace refined sugar in everything from smoothies to baked goods and are a great source of vitamin B6 and potassium.

Maple syrup

Maple syrup is about the same sweetness as white sugar and contains antioxidants, calcium, iron, and potassium However, it does still contain quite a bit of sugar, so it is not the healthiest substitute for white sugar.

Figs / dates / raisins

These sweet fruits have minerals such as calcium and iron, in addition to fiber and potassium. Combine water and these fruits to create am or puree that can be used as both a sugar and fat replacement!
