Chocolate Covered Strawberries: An Update

Those of you who read my blog post from a couple weeks ago know that I am not the best cook. Or a remotely good cook, for that matter - I somehow managed to screw up chocolate covered strawberries, which only need two (2) ingredients (you can check out my previous blog post for all the horrific details).

However, today I managed to turn that bad luck streak around - by making my mom help me with everything.

This time around, we used high quality chocolate (or at least high-er quality). We busted out some fancy baking white chocolate, and some Nestle melting chocolate, and got to work.

So, without further ado, here are Emily’s Top 10 Tips to not screwing up your chocolate covered strawberries.

  1. Use good chocolate. Seriously. Last time around we used Nestle chocolate too, but the difference was, there were no melting instructions on the back. So if you’re looking at some Nestle chocolate, melting instructions are a pretty good hint that your chocolate is meltable. (duh)
  2. Do not add milk. It will not end well.
  3. If you’re using bad chocolate (or if you’re having some trouble getting a smooth enough consistency for dipping), add some vegetable oil to help smoothen it out. Just a spoonful for a bowl should be enough, but feel free to add more as needed.
  4. Do not add milk. It will not end well.
  5. Double boilers reign supreme. Get a pot, fill it with water, and get a bowl that can sit on top of your pot without falling in. Boil your water, and put your chocolate in the bowl on top to melt. This will keep it hot but not hot enough to cause problems. Make sure not to get any water inside!
  6. Do not add milk. It will not end well.
  7. If you’re feeling fancy, try some white chocolate covered strawberries too!
  8. Do not add milk. It will not end well.
  9. You can also drizzle some opposite-colored chocolate over top of your strawberries. If your chocolate is pretty liquid-y, you can just use a spoon to drizzle chocolate on top, but if not, filling a plastic bag with chocolate and cutting a small corner off for a makeshift piping bag works too! Try to keep your piping hole small.
  10. Do not add milk. It will not end well.

If you follow all the tips listed above, hopefully you can end up with something like this!

Or maybe you’ll show me up and pull off something even better. (I didn’t set the bar too high.)

Either way, you probably won’t screw them up as badly as I did last time. Happy cooking!
