Au Revoir: How to Experience the Thrill of Traveling at Home

During the time of the novel coronavirus, we are all a bit constrained when it comes to travel. As of April, Airlines and TSA reported a 96% drop in air travel. For me, being in my house for an extended period of time had me feeling stir crazy and claustrophobic. In the need for a little travel? These methods can help you satisfy your wanderlust.

  1. Go on a road trip: Get in your car and drive to a campground for the weekend. Camping trips are a great way to reconnect with nature and a change of scenery may be just what you need. Have furry friends? Bring them with you. Humans are not the only ones experiencing wanderlust during the pandemic. Take the time away from society to experience nature at its most beautiful; wake up to experience a sunrise or play in a nearby river with your family. Make s’mores around a crackling fire and sing songs or take time to reflect on the situation. Banana boats are a staple when it comes to camping trips. (see recipe below)
  2. Chef it up: Food has no boundaries. And while we can’t travel to exotic destinations, nothing is stopping us from experiencing their cuisine. Browse the internet for some exotic recipes and chef away. Feeling French? Try making some homemade croissants. Try them for breakfast (or any time of day) served with fresh fruit and some Greek yogurt. Changing up your eating routine can make quarantined life more interesting. During quarantine, my family and I have been making new recipes, which, in addition to being a great bonding activity, makes quarantined life much more interesting.
  3. Listen to some exotic tunes: Music is another thing without boundaries. Part of my quarantine summer routine consists of me going outside, and basking in the sun whilst listening to my French Riviera playlist (the vibes are sublime folks).
  4. Take time to get outside: It is natural to get a little stir crazy when cooped up inside. Take time out of your day to experience the outdoors and stretch your legs. I myself have been taking 2 hour walks a few times a week with my family. Try exploring new neighborhoods in your community or heading to a community park.
  5. Read: Reading books is a great way to pass the time in quarantine. Some honorable mentions are Chocolat by Joanne Harris and Sister of My Heart by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni.
  6. Watch Movies: There are so many great movies out there, many of which are based in exotic destinations. To connect with my Indian side, I watched some Bollywood Movies, a very entertaining experience. I highly recommend Dhoom 2.
